The Final Break

"We're free"

Guppy's Family

The Pregnant Guppy was a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft built in the USA and used for ferrying outsized cargo items, most notably NASA's components of the Apollo moon program. The Pregnant Guppy was the first of the Guppy line of aircraft produced by Aero Spacelines, Inc.

This extraordinary aircraft was the result of a confluence of circumstances, aircraft and people. In 1960, US airlines were disposing of their obsolete piston-engined Boeing 377 Stratocruisers in favour of the newer jet-engined airliners. NASA was finding that barge transport of their increasingly large space program components from manufacturers on the West Coast to test and launch sites on the East Coast was slow and expensive. Aircraft broker Leo Mansdorf was stockpiling surplus Stratocruisers at Van Nuys prior to resale, and ex-USAF pilot John M. Conroy realized the potential of these aircraft to transport the large but relatively light rocket components.

Conroy presented his plans for an extensively modified Stratocruiser to NASA, where an official commented that the bloated aircraft resembled a pregnant guppy. Although NASA was lukewarm on the concept, Conroy mortgaged his house and founded Aero Spacelines International in order to build and operate the concept aircraft.

The Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied US cargo aircraft used for ferrying outsized cargo components. It was the successor to the Pregnant Guppy.

In the early 1970s, four Super Guppies were used by Airbus Industrie to transport aeroplane parts from decentralised production facilities to the final assembly plant in Toulouse. The running joke was "Every Airbus is delivered on the wings of a Boeing". The super Guppies have since been replaced by the Airbus Beluga, capable of carrying twice as much cargo.

And afterwards... the Mini Guppy!

Rutan Voyager

On December 23, 1986, the Burt Rutan-designed Voyager aircraft landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California, completing the first non-stop, non-refueled flight around the world by an airplane. Its flight of 26,366 statute miles lasted 9 days, 3 minutes, and 44 seconds, piloted by Dick Rutan (Burt’s brother) and Jeanna Yeager.

Burt Rutan made his reputation with innovative designs for homebuilt aircraft, including the VariViggen, VariEze, Long-EZ, and others. He and brother Dick conceived the idea of a non-stop, non-refueled, around-the-world flight in 1980. They predicted the project would take 18 months. It took 6 years.

Construction of the Voyager began in the summer of 1982, with a first flight two years later. The airframe was built without metal components. The main material used was a composite sandwich of paper honeycomb and graphite fiber, molded and oven-cured.

Voyager is, in effect, a flying fuel tank. Its gross takeoff weight for the record flight was 9,694.5 lbs., of which 7,011 lbs. was fuel, carried in 17 tanks. When the flight ended nine days later, only 140 lbs. of fuel remained.

Power comes from two engines, one at each end of the fuselage. The rear engine, a 110-hp air-cooled Teledyne Continental IOL-200 ran for all but 8 minutes of the flight, when a fuel feed problem shut it down. The front engine, a 130-hp, air-cooled Teledyne Continental O-240, provided takeoff and climb power, and backup for the rear engine.

Voyager’s official average speed during the around-the-world flight was 116 mph. Its altitude averaged around 11,000 feet, climbing as high as 20,500 ft. Voyager’s route was set with the help of a team of meteorologists who guided the pilots around storms and into favorable winds.

Voyager’s flight was a stunning triumph, accomplished by Rutan’s project team, a host of volunteers, many small private contributions, and no government sponsorship.

To Remi, intesresting book! :P

Internacional Lease Finance Corporation

The International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) is an aircraft lessor headquartered in Los Angeles, California. It is the world's largest aircraft lessor by value, though ILFC's rival, General Electric's GECAS unit, has more aircraft. It leases Boeing and Airbus aircraft to airlines worldwide, including Air Canada, Air France-KLM, Aegean Airlines, Lufthansa, American Airlines, Air India, Continental Airlines, Mexicana, Emirates Airline, Vietnam Airlines, Vueling Airlines and most recently, Delta Air Lines.

Father and son team Leslie Gonda and Louis L. Gonda founded ILFC in 1973 along with Steven F. Udvar-Hazy. The company was acquired by international insurance giant AIG in 1990, although the unit is still run by Udvar-Hazy.

According to the Wall Street Journal (Tuesday, May 13, 2008, Page C1), in 2007 ILFC earned revenues of $4.73 billion and income of $604 million, with a staff of only 170 people.

"The airline industry dodged two bullets this week. The rescue of AIG, once the world’s biggest insurer, also saved its subsidiary, ILFC, a market leader in aircraft-leasing. As a result 900 planes did not fall into the hands of the receivers, which would have caused confusion and disruption to dozens of airlines around the world." According to Economist.com
